Suggested Tags Manual for Everyone
(Version 1.01) [last updated January 12, 2017]

If you have some time to kill, please help us tag. If nothing else, please tag your own card. Better tagging means your card(s) will have more exposure and all users will benefit in the long run. This also ensures that similar cards are properly grouped together and catalogued.

I will be honest with you: tagging is very dull work. But it's absolutely necessary (and one man's not nearly enough). Music helps tremendously. Or just put on a movie that you've seen before.

Use the "edit" button underneath the image to start.

Update Notes

Version 1.01 [January 12, 2017]
- Tags for best types of gloves added to "gloves" section
- Basic guidelines #12 updated (when tagging ____ keep it generic)
- Basic guidelines #15 updated (on tagging personality/character traits)
- Added "multicolored_eyes" tag to "Eye Tags" section
- Changed butt tags in "Body Proportion Tags" section
- Corrected some spelling errors

Version 1.00 [January 11, 2017]

Basic Guidelines

1. Use a single space to separate different tags (not a comma, a period, etc.)
2. Use an underscore for the same tag if it contains more than one word and you need to space the words (e.g. "my_mother_is_a_cow_and_I_have_the_udders_to_prove_it_2_you")
3. Unless you're tagging a scene from the studio or a card from another Illusion game (i.e. sbpr), the rule of thumb is to always add the "female/male", "honey_select" and "tagme" tags
4. [whatever is inside these square brackets] below further explain the tag - they're just there to provide an explanation as to what the tag is used for

5. There are basically two types of cards: a) cards that are original creations or b) cards that are based on preexisiting work/people
5a) Because original creations don't have preestablished backgrounds, you can only really tag them by their physical features, their clothing/accessory and their species if they're non-human. More often than not you will be forced to load up the character model in the character creator just to see what clothing they are wearing and what accessories they're packing - if you really want to be anal about it. These are very time consuming to tag (and hence it's recommended that you just do a preliminary tag based on hair/eye color, body proportions and whatever else you can discern from a glance) -> card uploaders, please tag at least the eye and hair color (and less subtle moles) - sometimes it's very hard to tell from looking at the 252x352 size card, especially if the character is zoomed out (thank you in advance for your consideration)
5b) Cards that are based on preexisting work/people are easier to tag. You can tag them based on the series/medium that they're from, their character/real name, and their individual series if that same universe contains multiple series - if you want to go the extra mile you can always throw in physical features, clothing, etc. as well.

6. When in doubt, reference Gelbooru! We are a derivative board after all and they have a very good tagging system in place already
7. ALWAYS CHECK YOUR SPELLING! Please, this is very important. Incorrectly tagged cards - especially cards based on preexisting work - will quickly disappear into the sea of 4000+ cards (as of January 9th, 2017) and it takes a lot of work, time and luck to retrieve it again

8. Always check the number beside each tag. They denote how many cards are currently filed under that tag. If you're tagging a common enough physical trait for example and your chosen tag only shows 1-10 cards, consider alternative spelling/spacing to see if there's a more commonly used tag in place already (i.e. big_breasts/big_boobies/large_boobs/cow_udders/super_huge_titties/etc. should all use the tag "large_breasts" instead)
8a) Basically if you're going to introduce a new tag please make sure an identical/similar tag doesn't exist already

9. Please tag the mod(s) that you used if you are the card uploader (or include it in the reply section below/as a note). If you are unsure of the mod(s) used because you forgot/are not the creator of the card, please use the tag "mod_request"
10. If the card is not yours and you are unsure of the source of the card, please include the tag "source_request" as someone else may know (please remove this tag once the source has been added to the source section)

11. I've seen some contributors tag the names of their original creations. I don't think this is a good idea because a) there's already a section to put the original character's name, b) I can't imagine someone would visit this site and go "man I want to see all the original Janes/Cathys this site has to offer" and c) the name may overlap with a preexisting/soon-to-be-created character from some other popular series -> just tag the card with your username if you're the creator or maybe use a tag like "youroriginalcharactername_(username)" (of course this is just my opinion - suggestions/differing opinions are always welcome)

12. When tagging ____ try to keep it as generic as possible and don't consider shades for the most part (i.e. blue_skin instead of cyan_skin/purple_hair instead of magenta_hair/grey_eyes instead of hazel_eyes/etc.)
13. If the preexisting character appears in more than one medium/series please try to include them all (i.e. manga, anime, light_novel, etc.)
14. Please avoid standalone color tags (i.e. blue or green etc.) because they're not terribly descriptive - we have color_hair/color_skin/color_eyes/etc. tags already; if you need to describe people of a particular ethnicity there are alternative suggestions below (See "Original Character Tags" section)

15. Please consider tagging personality/character trait for your character(s) (e.g. perverted/tsundere/gentle/diligent/masochist/boyish and so on)
15a) Personality tags are recommended for preestalished characters (i.e. Misaka_Mikoto -> tsundere; Ayanami_Rei -> withdrawn and so on)

16. When tagging clothing/accessory it may be best/more efficient to narrow it down to whatever set is featured on the card itself - because that's the one the card uploader chose to showcase (although if you feel strongly about it you can always tag all three sets - normal/room/bath)

On Name Tagging

- For Japanese names the family (or last) name should precede the first name (i.e. Miyamoto_Musashi not Musashi_Miyamoto -> this is based on Gelbooru)
- For Western names the first name obviously comes first (i.e. John_Smith not Smith_John)
- Characters from preexisting series that only have a single name should include their series name along with their name in the same tag (see section below on "Series Tag" for further explanation)

NOTE: The tag list below is not comprehensive. These are just some of the more common tags and I've included them to help you get started.

Basic Tags

female [meaning it's a character card]
male [meaning it's a character card]

honey_select [illusioncards - the admin of this booru - originally intended for this image board to host cards from a wide variety of Illusion games, hence the need for this tag; admittedly this board is presently 99% HoneySelect cards and other card types don't get much love here]

tagme
scene
screenshot
studio
ss [studio scene I believe?]
sbpr [Sexy Beach Premium Resort]

source_request [if it's not your card and you don't know the source]

[These are some of the more popular mod tags currently in-use on the site. Please feel free to suggest more mod tags.]

Series Tags

(Using Taimanin as an example)

taimanin_(series) [Always include this tag for characters from the Taimanin universe]

igawa_asagi taimanin_asagi [Asagi is from the Taimanin Asagi game hence the 2nd tag]
igawa_sakura taimanin_asagi

ingrid_(taimanin_asagi) taimanin_asagi
[Ingrid aka Hell Knight Ingrid is tagged by her name followed by the series that she's from - this is to prevent identical names from different series from overlapping in the tags; pretty much why we almost always use first and last name in the tags - some exceptions apply of course; say, if the character has a very unusual/unique name or if the single name character has already called dibs on that name on Gelbooru, then later characters with that same name will have to include their series name to avoid overlap]
oboro_(taimanin_asagi) taimanin_asagi

akiyama_rinko taimanin_yukikaze [Rinko is from the Taimanin Yukikaze game so if you were to tag her you would use these three tags: "taimanin_(series)", "taimanin_yukikaze" and "akiyama_rinko"]

If you don't know/remember the name of the character but you recognize the character from somewhere, just use the tag "character_request" and I'm sure somebody will eventually figure it out. Sometimes it helps to load up the character model as the name will be there.

That's the basic idea for tagging series. You'll get a feel for it the more you tag.

Body Proportion Tags

large_breasts [go with your gut feeling - everyone's definition of what's large will vary]
small_breasts [same deal]
flat_chest [I will usually use this in conjunction with the small_breasts tag unless the character actually has some semblance of boobage in which case I will only use small_breasts]

thick_thighs
skinny_thighs [we should introduce this tag]
wide_hips
narrow_hips [we should introduce this tag]
large_ass
small_ass [we should introduce this tag]

fat/chubby/plump [I've seen all three used - pick your favorite or use all three to be thorough? Or should we stick with one?]
curvy [for the hourglass body types]
muscular/athletic
abs
petite/skinny/slim [same deal as above]
loli
shota
bbw [big beautiful woman]

tall [I generally use this tag for characters that have a height value of 90 and up - again this is subjective so just use your best judgment]
short [I generally use this tag for lolis or child-like sized characters]
giantess [I generally use this tag for characters that have a height value of 200 and up - subjective of course; please use your best judgment]

Facial Feature Tags [not currently in use - I would like to recommend them]

prominent_nose/protruding_nose
flat_nose
high_nose_bridge
low_nose_bridge
large_nose
small_nose
small_eyes
large_eyes
big_lips

Hair Tags

color_hair [i.e. "red_hair" - if it's a shade and it could be either red/brown then just tag both colors]
bangs
no_bangs
short_hair
long_hair
ponytail
side_ponytail
twintails
hair_bun
braided_hair
braid_(accessory)
multicolored_hair [if you see more than one hair color then tag both colors]
facial_hair
pubic_hair [I use it if it's visible on the card but if your character has pubes then by all means include it]

Eye Tags

color_eyes [i.e. "red_eyes" - tag as many eye colors as you can see]
multicolored_eyes [both for two eyes of different colors and for eyes that are a blend of colors]
slit_pupils [for cat/lizard/dragon/etc. eye(s) - use even if only one eye]
black_sclera [black eye whites]

Original Characters Tags

sexy/pretty/gorgeous/perfect/cute [highly recommended to avoid the use of these kinds of tags - they are highly subjective and odds are you'll trigger somebody's "whatever man my girl is way sexier/prettier/cuter/more gorgeous/more perfect" defence mechanism and they'll instinctively dislike you and your post for your tastes/opinions - even though everyone obviously thinks their own girl is best. It's best to tag by factual information than by feelings/opinions.]

[these tags are also currently not in use. I put them here as a recommendation for replacing race-by-color tags]

Caucasian_features
Asian_features
African_features
Caribbean_features
Indian_features
Middle_Eastern_features
South_American_features
Aboriginal_features

[you can always include more than one feature if the character looks like she/he is of mixed ethnicity - if she's clearly Japanese/Korean/American/French/Indian/etc. then by all means add those tags as well]

If anyone has better suggestions for tagging different ethnicities, I'm all ears. But let's go beyond just color labels - black/white/brown/yellow/red/etc.

Skin Tags

color_skin [i.e. "blue_skin" - if you see more than one skin color then just tag both colors; for more human skin tones maybe opt for the tags below instead]
dark_skin
pale_skin
light_skin [anything darker than pale skin but lighter than dark skin could use this tag? I'd say it's closer to the pale skin end - I don't generally use this one]
tan [if the character looks tanned]
tan_lines [if tan lines were applied during the character creation process]

freckles
mole
tattoo
lipstick
piercings

Animal ear/animal girl/furry Tags

animal_ears/kemonomimi [use both together please - I've noticed some prefer one over the other so I opted to include both]
cat_ears_(accessory) [always add this tag if and only if the model uses the cat ear accessory -> then if the model is obviously not a cat girl, also add the ear type that belongs to that type of animal]
cat_girl
fox_ears
fox_girl/kitsune [former more for furries and the latter for Japanese fox girls? Wouldn't mind some input on this]

wolf_ears
wolf_girl [e.g. so if you were tagging Holo from Wolf and Spice, you would use the tags "animal_ears", "kemonomimi", "cat_ears_(accessory)", "wolf_ears", "wolf_girl" and any other appropriate tags]

leopard_ears_(accessory)/leopard_print [the latter is for when she's wearing the leopard outfit]

I notice your handy-dandy guide here is missing both elbow_gloves and fingerless_gloves in the apropriate section; the undisputable best types of gloves.
shit guide. 0/10
:smug:

But seriously though...
15. This is more of a question, but should we tag personality/character trait(s) as well?

I see no reason not to. As I've said before, the more tags the better (it's the quality of the tags that are the real concern). As you said, I'm sure there's not many people that would find it useful, but that one guy that only wants tsundere girls will appreciate it if we tagged those cards appropriatly I'm sure.

also,
Eye Tags
[...]
heterochromia [two different pupil colors]

That's a $5 word right there. Let me reference an earlier part of the guide
12. When tagging [hair] colors try to keep it as generic as possible and don't consider shades for the most part

or more simply...
When tagging [...] keep it as generic as possible

It's quite annoying to search for a tag you think's (and actually is) super generic (e.g. milf) only to be greeted with some stupid phrase talking about poultry because your vocabulary doesn't match up with somebody else's. It's the same principle behind not using subjective tags like cute/perfect/hot/etc (kind of).
For the specific eye type in question, I've been using the tag 'multicolored_eyes' (both for two eyes of different colors and for eyes that are a blend of colors); but if there's a large enough body of people here that believe 'heterochromia' would be a better, more clear/obvious/whatever tag, I can add an alias for one or the other so everybody's happy.

Oh, speaking of aliases.
When you're adding/editing tags for a post, any tag you add that matches an existing alias will be expanded into whatever tag that alias is mapped to; so take a look through the alias page once and a while. This way you won't have to keep typing in an entire series' 30+ character name for those 20 cards the some anon just uploaded and didn't add a single fucking tag to, you can instead just enter 3 letters and it'll work out just fine.

P.S. Kind of a redundant thread considering the sticky, but it isn't hurting anyone and it's quite an extensive piece. Thanks for helping keep this place at least somewhat organized

Lol, well when you put it that way...don't mention it? :)

Thanks for the feedback. I will definitely check out the alias page.

I definitely considered posting this under the sticky "On tagging" topic at one point (it's messy to have two topics on tagging, that's for sure). Shall I go ahead and move it there then (and perhaps you can help me close this one)?

How about a pastebin? Keeps the first page from being too cluttered since you can just post a link and, imo, pastebin's styling makes it easier to read.

Also, if you go this route I would suggest making the tag listing and the guidelines two separate links.

Awesome. I'll add the links to the sticky and lock this thread so we can keep discussion in the sticky.
